The Starkbierfest at the Nockherberg in Munich is the largest strong beer festival in the world, lasting 24 days and taking place every year at the Paulaner Nockherberg at Hochstraße 77 in Munich.
The Starkbierzeit (strong beer season) is the so-called fifth season in Munich (not, as is often mistakenly assumed, the Oktoberfest season).
Up to 4,000 visitors daily, and even up to 8,000 on weekends, celebrate at the Nockherberg in a great atmosphere and enjoy the specially brewed strong beer, the Salvator (the forefather of all strong beers, the forefather of all Doppelbock beers, which traditionally end in "-ator"!) with an original gravity of 18.5% and an alcohol content of 8.0%.
The serving of strong beer has its origins in Lent for over 375 years, according to the Paulaner Order's rule "Liquids do not break the fast" (Latin: "Liquida non frangunt ieunum"). According to this rule, it was traditionally permitted to consume a stronger beer during the austere Lenten season, as a kind of "liquid bread."
The Salvator is a bottom-fermented Doppelbock beer invented according to a traditional recipe with a caramel-colored head and a chestnut-brown beer with a light hop note in the background.
Since 2018, DIE KIRCHDORFER® | K-LIVE® have been playing atmospheric music from various genres, including rock, pop, brass bands, hits, and Schlager, for 24 consecutive days every year at the Strong Beer Festival.
